Blood pressure
THE THEORY:
A sphygmomanometer is device used to measure blood
pressure . comprising an inflatable cuff
to restrict blood flow .and a mercury or mechanical manometer to measure
the pressure .it is always used in conjunction with means to determine at –what
pressure blood flow is just starting and at what pressure it is unimpeded
manual sphygmomanometer are used in conjunction with a stethoscope .blood
pressure means that the force exerted by the blood against any unit area of the
vessel wall. There are two wavs of
recording pressure in pascal unit:
Absolute pressure : P = Pº + pgh-1
Gauge pressure : P – Pº
= pgh-2
Sphygmomanometer measure gauge pressure which balance arterial pressure
against that of a column of mercury{Hg}
open to the atmosphere . which represent the pressures relation in it .pressure
in the left-side of the base is( P +
pgh) and on the right –side
is ( Pº + pgh2),where P is the pressure of the arterial system and Pº
is the atmospheric pressure .Since the pressure is equal at the same depths ;so
p+ pgh1= Po+ P
g h 2
p- po=
pg(h2-h1)= pgΔh
the height h1 is usually calibrated as zero on the
scale and thus the measurement of blood pressure is gauge pressure .Because
pressure is proportional to height ( Ap =
pgΔh ) so the height of column of mercury indicates
to the pressure of blood in (mmHg) unit .the The cardiac cycle consists of a
period of relaxation called (
diastole)followed by a period of contraction called( systole)and the blood
pressure given as
ـfollowing :blood pressure (BP)
And the average blood pressure is given by :
And the difference between
systole and diastole pressure called as pulse pressure.
'Pulse pressure = ps – pd,,,,,,,,,,,,,(3)
While the
mean arterial blood pressure ( MAP) =
Which
represent the verged arterial pressure over the cycle or the pressure that
propels the blood to the tissues . MAP remains almost constant and it is given by:
PROCUDURE:
1-Determine the brachial artery in the hand of
human by putting the
stethoscope on thy is artery to
determine it by herring the sound of heart.
2- put the pressure cuff
around this place then inflated rapidly to a pressure sufficient to stop the
flow of blood .
3- Allow the air gradually decrease
in the cuff to decrease the pressure in
it until we heard( k sound)by stethoscope .
4- Record
the pressure in the manometer
this indicates the systolic
pressure in (mmHg).
5- Allow the air to
flow from the cuff gradually until the k
sound die out.
6-. Record the pressure in the manometer which indicates diastolic pressure,
7- Find blood pressure from eq.(1).
8- Find average blood pressure from eq.(2).
9-Find pulse blood pressure from eq.(3).
10-10.Find mean blood pressure from
eq.(4).
11-Find all the above pressure in pascal unit .
